Synonyms
Some products have more than one popular reference term, which can make it hard for you to anticipate what keyword your customers will use when searching for the product online. The Hawk Search Synonym Administration Section allows you to group common search terms together so that regardless of differences in terminology, your customers will always find the products that they seek.
Navigating to the Synonym Administration Section
1) To navigate to the Synonym Administration page, click on the "Workbench" tab in the top navigation bar.
2) Next, click on the "Keywords" link in the left navigation and choose "Synonyms" from the sub-categories. You will then be taken to the Synonym Administration page.
3) To perform a search on Synonyms enter the Search term you are looking for in the "Search term" field.
4) To search based on the synonym, type the synonym you are looking for into the "Synonym" field.
5) When you have entered information in one or more of these fields, click the "Search" button.
6) If you would like to edit an existing group, you can get to the edit page by clicking on the pencil icon next to the group. To copy a group of synonyms, click the "paper" icon. If you would like to remove a group, you can do this by clicking on the "trash can" icon. Then click "ok" to confirm the deletion.
7) Use the check boxes next to each item to select them for bulk processing. Choose the check box at the top to select all.
8) Use the "Actions" drop down for bulk processing options.
9) To add a new synonym group, click the "Add Synonym" link at the top of the page.
10) Use the "Export" button to export your list of synonyms. This allows you to compare synonym lists between multiple Workbench accounts.
Creating a Synonym Group for One Way
1) The "Multi-Way" feature allows you to indicate if the synonym is a one-way or multi-way synonym. Turn "Multi-Way" off for a one way synonym.
One-Way (Multi-Way: "Off") entries go from general to specific terms. The word(s) entered in "User Search Terms" is the term that the user will enter into the search box. The additional terms listed in "Synonyms" will be combined to the original term to create a more robust result set.
For Example:
· Shoes > Sandals, Slippers, Flats, Peep Toe, Closed Toe
If the user searches for shoes then the engine will return all products with the terms; shoes, sandals, slippers, flats, peep, and closed toe associate on the record. If the user searches for flats, only products with the term flat will be returned. This will be the same for all of the terms except for the "User Search Term(s)" which in this example is "shoes".
2) When you select "Multi Way: Off" you will need to enter information into two separate fields. "User Search Terms" are the terms that the user will enter into the search bar and are independent of each other.
3) The terms entered into "Synonyms" include the collective results that will be returned. You can add words or phrases; just make sure that you separate distinct terms with commas.
4) After you have added all the related synonyms, click the "Save" button to add your synonym to the list of synonym groups.
Creating a Synonym Group for Multi-way
1) The "Multi-Way" feature allows you to indicate if the synonym is a one-way or multi-way synonym.
Multi-Way (Multi-Way – "On") entries are interchangeable. All terms will return the same results.
For Example:
Gown = Dress = Frock
If a user executes a search for "gown" then the engine will returned all products with the terms "gown", "dress" and "frock" on record. If a user executes a search for "dress" the engine will also return all products with the terms "gown", "dress" and "frock" on record.
2) When you select "Multi Way: On" you will enter all terms in the Synonyms field making sure to separate each with a comma. All listed terms are interchangeable and the order of the terms is irrelevant.
3) After you have added all the related synonyms, click the "Save" button to add your synonym to the list of synonym groups.
Confirming the Addition of the Synonym Group
1) After you click save, you will be returned to the main Synonym Administration page. Review the list to make sure that your group has been added. Hovering over the "?" icon will display the date the Synonym Group was created and when it was last modified.
2) Then, return to the main Workbench page and rebuild the index file in order to see the changes.
Viewing Synonym Groups on the Front End
After you receive confirmation that your index file has been built and sent to the indexing service, your changes should be visible on the front-end of the site within another five minutes. You can verify the addition of the terms by entering the full term in the main "Search" box on the front-end of the site.
