Spelling Override

Because people using the internet are often in a hurry, the potential for typos and misspellings is high. Most internal site searches now accommodate for this by guessing which mistakes people are most likely to make. However, since those adjustments only apply generally, Hawksearch allows you to add the spelling errors and typos that will affect your business specifically. Spelling Overrides are used to customize and manipulate the Did You Mean suggestions and auto-correct. This guide will show you how manipulate the Did You Mean to return appropriate spelling suggestions in the few cases that the system doesn't recognize what you wish to see.

Navigating to the Spelling Override Administration Page

1) To navigate to the Spelling Override Administration Page, click on the "Workbench" tab in the top navigation

 2) Then, select the "Keyword Search" in the left navigation. Choose "Spelling Override" from the subcategories.

3) To edit a Spelling Override, click on the "pencil" icon, to copy a Spelling Override, click on the "paper" icon. To delete a Spelling Override, click on the "trash can" icon.

4) To add a new Spelling Override, click the "Add Spelling Suggestion" link.

5) To implement bulk actions, select individual items, or select all by clicking the box at the top.

6) Use the "Actions" drop down to delete selected items.

Adding Spelling Override Keywords

1) The Spelling Override section of the Workbench allows users to add spelling overrides as a Keyword Replacement or as a Spelling Override. With the Spelling Override function, the suggestions for a keyword will be offered to a user. For example, the rule above will use ‘shoe’ as the search term instead of ‘sheo.’

2) Enter the key word or words that you would like to override.

3) Next, add the correct keyword(s) that should appear when the misspelled word(s) above are used. These suggestions will display within the context of the "Did You Mean" verbiage. When the Did You Mean feature has been implemented in the workbench and auto-correct has been enabled within the configuration of Did You Mean, the engine will automatically redirect to the first suggestion in the case of an existing override Spelling Override. In other words, Spelling Overrides will override the default of the Did You Mean and can be used to adjust ill-fitting Did You Mean results.

4) Finally, save your changes by clicking the "Save" button.

Confirming the Addition of the Spelling Override Key Word

1) After you have saved your new group, you will be taken to the Spelling Override Administration page where you can confirm its addition. Hovering over the "?" icon will display the date the Spelling Override was created and when it was most recently modified.

2) Once you have confirmed the addition of your group, return to the main "Workbench" home page and click the "Rebuild Index" button.

Viewing Spelling Overrides from the Preview

After you receive confirmation that the index has been rebuilt, you should be able to view your changes on Preview. In the screenshot above, you can see where the site visitor misspelled the word "sheo". When Auto-Correct is enabled in conjunction with the Did You Mean feature, Hawksearch will automatically redirect to the page of the first suggestion. Hawksearch also will give you the option to search for the original "misspelled" word.
